Gin is a distillate made with neutral alcohol of high alcohol content, flavored with juniper berries and other botanical ingredients such as roots, spices, flowers, fruits or citrus.

June 10: the quintessential gin day

Every June 10 is celebrated as International Gin Day and we would like to take this opportunity to tell you about its origins and recommend some cocktails for you to enjoy, as never before, one of the most popular spirits in the world.

Origins of gin

Initially, gin had medicinal uses. A Dutch physician named Sylvius de la Boa first used it in 1550 as a remedy for stomach ailments.

The name of gin comes from the word ‘jenever’, which means juniper in Dutch. With the coronation of William III of England, it gained great popularity in Great Britain.

Gin cocktails

What better way to celebrate the ‘big day’ of gin than enjoying a delicious cocktail? From Bodega Aguilar we propose 3 suggestive options for you to enjoy the best gins on the market like never before.

Gin and tonic

The ingredients of this cocktail are very simple: gin and tonic. It is usually served with ice and some also accompany it with lemon or lime peel.

According to data from International Wine & Spirit Research (IWSR), Spain ranks third in the ranking of countries with the highest consumption of Gin Tonics. The nations that consume the popular drink the most are the United States and the Philippines.

Tom Collins

To prepare the Tom Collins cocktail you must have the following components: gin, lemon juice, sugar or syrup, soda and ice cubes.

This drink was born in the United States at the end of the 19th century and takes its name from a humorous anecdote that gained great popularity in cities such as Philadelphia and New York.

Gimlet

Lovers of acid flavors will appreciate like no one else the nuances of the popular Gimlet cocktail. It contains one part lime juice and two parts gin.

While it is true that the purists make the cocktail with only two ingredients, some bartenders add soda to the mix.

Its origins date back to the late 1920s in the United Kingdom and its name is believed to come from a hand tool of the same name.

There is no doubt that gin is one of the most popular spirits among Spaniards when it comes to enjoying a drink, especially on special occasions such as family gatherings or with friends. If you would like to consult our gin catalog, just click here: Happy International Gin Day!
