THE WHITE LADY (INTERNATIONAL LEMON DAY)

Today, September 30, is celebrated nothing more and nothing less than the International Lemon Day. And for us it is a perfect excuse to talk about what we love the most… which is none other than cocktails!

At AGUILAR we are great lovers of cocktails, those of you who know us already know that we have a large section on our website dedicated to this wonderful world and those who do not, here you have a great opportunity to take a look at all our related products.

Anyway, today we are going to talk about what for us is the most interesting cocktail with lemon, the White Lady.

WHITE LADY: THE LEMON COCKTAIL PAR EXCELLENCE

This wonderful cocktail is classified as an aperitif, as it is usually drunk before meals.

Its name is said to refer to the legend of the ghostly White Lady. The story of a woman dressed in white who wanders through abandoned places. And also, like the great cocktails of history, the White Lady is full of mystery and there are several stories and disputes about its creation.

One of them tells that it was invented in Scotland by a bartender named Harry McElhone in 1919 when he was working at the London Club Ciro’s. McElhone may ring a bell, as he was the creator of the legendary Brandy Alexander.

Another story tells us that the creator was another Harry, Mr. Craddock, a bartender from the USA who had to leave the country because of Prohibition. Craddock crossed the pond, started working at the Savoy Hotel and became one of the best bartenders of the time. The White Lady appears as early as 1930 in The Savoy Cocktail Bookone of the most important publications on bartending.

BUT HOW DO YOU MAKE A WHITE LADY?

The White Lady is a cocktail served in the traditional martini glass and is composed of Gin, Triple Seco and, of course, lemon juice.

It should be noted that there are many variations of this drink, some choose to make a sweet&sour by adding simple syrup to the lemon juice, others even add egg white.

Measurements are as follows:

50ml of Gin

15ml of Triple Dry

25ml Lemon Juice

10mil Simple Syrup (optional)

10ml of egg white (optional)

To prepare it just put all these ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake hard. Then serve in a martini glass and garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

From Bodega Aguilar we recommend as a base distillate to use the magnificent Roku Gin, a Japanese Gin that is giving much to talk about. For the Triple Seco we opted for a product of the house, our Oranjao.

Finally, remember to always drink in moderation and if life gives you lemons… Make yourself a White Lady!
